So, Why Are We Called by the Name, “Medical Missionary”...

  • Because this is the name that best describes who we are and what we do
  • Because God gave to us that name as it describes the very same work Jesus did when on the earth
  • This is the only name that completely encompasses the work of Jesus and His disciples
  • It explains why the health message is connected to the Medical Missionary work and used as an entering wedge or right arm
  • It explains why the work of the gospel should never be separated from the health work, i.e. Gospel Medical Missionary Work
  • This work will cover the whole earth before the end – disinterested benevolence – helping people in every way possible in a caring, loving and practical way
  • Because the message of salvation always includes healing; physically, mentally and spiritually

“Medical missionaries who labor in evangelistic lines are doing a work of as high an order as are their ministerial fellow laborers.” Evangelism p. 546

“We must be sanctified, soul and body, through the truth; then we shall honor the name*, medical missionary. Oh, this name,* means so much! It calls for a representation altogether different from the representation given by many who bear it. Soon these will understand how far they have departed from the principles of heaven and how greatly they have grieved the heart of Christ.” Medical Ministry p. 21

“No influence should be exerted to turn young men aside from qualifying themselves for ministerial missionary work. To this we may attach the word “medical”; for it is essential that the gospel minister shall have a knowledge of disease and its causes. He should know how to give help to the sick. He should be able to teach the people how to treat the house we live in. This is a part of the gospel.” Evangelism p. 547

May we appreciate the name* God has given us, Medical Missionary, and educate others as to the true meaning of the word “medical.” It is the highest honor God can bestow upon us. It is of heavenly origin. Medical Ministry p. 24. This word and work delineates not only the description of our work, but the prescription, the character, the salary, our diploma, and where we received our education!

Now, we understand better, why…

Did you know? In the near future…Satan will come in to deceive if possible the very elect. He claims to be Christ, and he is coming in, pretending to be the great Medical Missionary. He will cause fire to come down from heaven in the sight of men to prove that he is God.” Maranatha, The Lord is Coming p. 208

1. What is the medical missionary work?

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.” John 14:12.

“To take the people right where they are, whatever their position, whatever their condition, and help them in every way possible – this is gospel ministry.” Medical Ministry p. 238.

“Put into practice what you know regarding the treatment of disease. Thus suffering will be relieved, and you will have opportunity to break the bread of life to starving souls.” Manuscript 55, 1901.

Our work is clearly defined. As the father sent His only begotten Son into our world, even so Christ sends us, His disciples, as His medical missionary workers.” Testimonies to Ministers p. 24.

Medical missionary work is the pioneer work of the gospel, the door through which the truth for this time is to find entrance to many homes.” Counsels on Health p. 491.

“Medical missionary work is the right arm to the third angel’s message.” Testimonies Vol. 6, p. 229.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12: 1, 2.

“It is the pioneer work of the gospel. It is the gospel practiced, the compassion of Christ revealed.” Medical Ministry p. 239.

“Reform, continual reform, must be kept before the people, and by our example we must enforce our teachings. True religion and the laws of health go hand in hand. It is impossible to work for the salvation of men and women without presenting to them the need of breaking away from sinful gratifications, which destroy the health, debase the soul and prevent divine truth from impressing the mind. Men and women must be taught to take a careful review of every habit and every practice  and at once put away those things that cause an unhealthy condition of the body, and thus cast a dark shadow over the mind.” Counsels on Health p. 445.

2. Where did the idea of medical missionary work originate?

“True medical missionary work is of heavenly origin. It was not originated by any person who lives… The medical missionary work is of divine origin and has a most glorious mission to fulfill.” Medical Ministry p. 24.

“Medical missionary work is a sacred thing of God’s own devising.” Medical Ministry p. 131.

“I wish to say that the medical missionary work is God’s work.” Notebook Leaflets, Vol. 1 #42.

3. Was Jesus a medical missionary?

“Christ stands before us as the pattern man, the great Medical Missionary – an example for all who should come after.”
Medical Ministry p. 20.

“The Savior’s work was not restricted to any time or place.” Ministry of Healing p. 1.

“He passed by no human being as worthless.” Ministry of Healing p. 3.

“Those who labor as Christ, the great Medical Missionary, labored must be spiritual-minded.” Reflecting Christ p. 231.

“What then, is the example that we are to set to the world? We are to do the same work that the Great Medical Missionary undertook in our behalf. We are to follow the path of self-sacrifice trodden by Christ.” Medical Ministry p. 20.

“To every medical missionary worker I am instructed to say, Follow your Leader. He is the way, the truth, the light, the life. He is the One whose example we as true medical missionaries must follow.” Medical Ministry p. 22.

4. What names are medical missionaries called?

“Medical missionary comes under the head of evangelists… We are instructed in the word of God that an evangelist is a teacher. He should also be a medical missionary.” Medical Ministry p. 249.

5. What kind of men and women are wanted as medical missionaries?

“Human strength is weakness, human wisdom is folly. Our success does not depend on our talents or learning, but on our living connection with God.” Testimonies Vol. 5, p. 158.

Holy and devout persons, both men and women, are wanted now to go forth as medical missionaries. Let them cultivate their physical and mental powers and their piety to the uttermost. Every effort should be made to send forth intelligent workers.”
Medical Ministry p. 250.

“We need here substantial men and women; we need men, those who will reveal the simplicity of true godliness. We need men and women who are solid Christians, who will not feel that if they have had some experience they must therefore be highly honored. You cannot be religious at times and at other times irreligious.” Medical Ministry p. 202.

“In choosing men and women for His service, God does not ask whether they possess worldly wealth, learning, or eloquence. He asks “Do they walk in such humility that I can teach them My way? Can I put my words into their lips? Will they represent me?”
Ministry of Healing p. 8.

6. Who can be a Medical Missionary?

“We have come to a time when every member of the church should take hold of medical missionary work. The world is a lazar house filled with victims of both physical and spiritual disease.  Everywhere people are perishing for lack of a knowledge of the truths that have been committed to us. The members of the church are in need of an awakening that they may realize their responsibility to impart these truths.” Testimonies Vol. 7, p. 62.

7. Who are qualified for the medical missionary work – just medical or health professionals only?

“From the light that God has given me, I know that His cause today is in great need of the living representatives of Bible truths. The ordained ministers alone are not equal to the task. God is calling not only upon the ministers, but also upon the physicians, nurses, canvassers, bible workers, and other consecrated laymen of varied talents who have a knowledge of present truth.”
Medical Ministry pp. 248-249.

8. Why do we need the crash course; Medical Missionary Mentorship Program?

“Many who desire to obtain knowledge in medical missionary lines have home duties that sometimes prevent them from meeting with others for study. These may learn in their own homes in regard to the express will of God concerning these lines of missionary work, thus increasing their ability to help others.”  Counsels on Health p. 427.

“Workers – gospel medical missionaries – are needed NOW! You cannot afford to spend years in preparation. Soon doors now open to the truth will be forever closed. Carry the message NOW. Do not wait, allowing the enemy to take possession of the fields now open before you. Let little companies go forth to do the work to which Christ appointed His disciples. Let them labor as evangelists, scattering our publications, and talking of the truth to those they meet. Let them pray for the sick, ministering to their necessities, not with drugs, but with nature’s remedies, and teaching them how to regain health and avoid disease.” Testimonies Vol. 9, pp. 171,172.

“Time is short, and there is a great work to be done. If you feel no interest in the work that is going forward, if you will not encourage medical missionary work in the churches, it will be done without your consent; for it is the work of God and it must be done.”
Testimonies Vol. 8, p. 75.

“Time is rapidly passing. There is much work to be done before satanic opposition shall close up the way. Every agency must be in operation, that present opportunities may be wisely improved.” Review and Herald, April 7, 1910.

9. How many medical missionaries is the Lord calling to get involved in “The Work?

See The Work

“There should be one hundred believers actively engaged in personal missionary work where now there is but one.”
Medical Ministry p. 249.

“The evangelization of the world is the work that God has given to those who go forth in His name. They are to be colaborers with Christ, revealing to those ready to perish His tender, pitying love. God calls for thousands to work for Him, not by preaching to those who know the truth, going over and over the same ground, but by warning those who have never heard the last message of mercy.” (An Appeal for the Medical Missionary College, p. 14.)

…AND HOW MANY WOULD RESPOND?

“Had you carried the work forward in the lines in which God intended you to, had you done medical missionary work, trying to heal soul and body, you would have seen hundreds and thousands coming into the truth.” (General Conference Bulletin April 12, 1901, para. 22.)

If there were a sudden disaster, EMP emergency, economic crisis, or some other weather related catastrophe, would you be ready to help someone else at a moment’s notice? You may even need help yourself!

See: Medical Missionary Emergency Bags and be ready for any emergency to help someone in need! (Even if it is just to give someone water or comfort until help arrives.)

“Soon strife among the nations will break out with an intensity that we do not now anticipate. The present is a time of overwhelming interest to all living. Rulers and statesmen, men who occupy positions of trust and authority, thinking men and women of all classes, have their attention fixed upon the events taking place about us. They are watching the strained, restless relations that exist among the nations. They observe the intensity that is taking possession of every earthly element, and they realize that something great and decisive is about to take place, that the world is on the verge of a stupendous crisis.” Medical Ministry p. 333.

“A storm is coming, relentless in its fury. Are we prepared to meet it?” Testimonies Vol. 8, p. 315.

10. What specific instructions has been given us that we are not to ignore regarding the medical missionary work?

The Power of Two: See Deuteronomy 19:15, Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, Acts 1:10,11, 2 Corinthians 13:1, Matthew 18:20, Mark 6:7, Luke 10:1.

  1. “The workers should go forth two by two, that they may pray and consult together. Never should they be sent out alone. The Lord Jesus Christ sent forth His disciples two and two into all the cities of Israel.” Medical Ministry p. 249.
  2. “No line is to be drawn between the genuine medical missionaries work and the gospel ministry. These two must blend. They are not to stand apart as separate lines of work. They are to be joined in an inseparable union, even as the hand is joined to the body.” Medical Ministry p. 250.
  3. “Physical healing is bound up with the gospel commission. In the work of the gospel, teaching and healing are never to be separated.” Ministry of Healing p. 140.
  4. “Those who live in the last days of this earth’s history need to be fully established in the principles of health reform.”
    Testimonies Vol. 3, pp. 140-141.
  5. “Keep the work of health reform to the front is the message I am instructed to bear.” Testimonies Vol. 9, pp. 112-113.
  6. “It is the Lord’s design that the restoring influence of health reform shall be a part of the last great effort to proclaim the gospel message.” Medical Ministry p. 259.
  7. “Educate away from drugs…” Medical Ministry p. 259.

We are further given the precious counsel:

“Educate people in the laws of life so that they may know how to preserve health. The efforts actually put forth at present are not meeting the mind of God. Drug medication is a curse to this enlightened age.” Medical Ministry p. 259.

“Many might recover without one grain of medicine if they would live out the laws of health. Drugs need seldom be used.” Medical Ministry p. 259.

“We must cooperate with the Chief of Physicians, walking in all humility of mind before Him. Then the Lord will bless our earnest efforts to relieve suffering humanity. It is not by the use of poisonous drugs that this will be done, but by the use of simple remedies.” Medical Ministry p. 85.

“Our people should become intelligent in the treatment of sickness without the aid of poisonous drugs. Thousands have gone down to the grave because of the use of poisonous drugs, who might have been restored to health by simple methods of treatment. Water treatments, wisely and skillfully given, may be the means of saving many lives.” Medical Ministry p. 57.

“The light God has given on the subject of disease and its causes needs to be dwelt upon largely; for it is wrong habits in the indulgence of appetite and inattention to the care of the body that tells upon people.” Medical Ministry p. 227

Listen to this eye-opening statement in chapter 3 of Disease and Its Causes, “Fashionable Poisons, Epigenetics and Inheritance”:

“The human family have brought upon themselves diseases of various forms by their own wrong habits. They have not studied how to live healthfully, and their transgressions of the laws of their being has produced a deplorable state of things. The people have seldom accredited their sufferings to the true cause — their own wrong course of action… When in distress they send for the doctor, and trust their bodies in his hands, expecting that he will make them well. He deals out to them drugs, the nature  of which they know nothing, and in their blind confidence they swallow anything that the doctor may choose to give. Thus powerful poisons are often administered which FETTER NATURE in all her FRIENDLY EFFORTS to recover the abuse the system has suffered, and the patient is hurried out of this life.” Disease and Its Causes, p. 46 by E.G. White.

    And this disturbing statement:

“If those who take these drugs were alone the sufferers, then the evil would not be as great. But parents not only sin against themselves in swallowing drug-poisons, but they sin against their children. The vitiated state of their blood, the poison distributed throughout the system, the broken constitution, and the various drug-diseases, as the result of drug-poisons, are transmitted to their offspring, and left them as a wretched inheritance, which is another great cause of the degeneracy of the race…Everywhere you may go you will see deformity, disease and imbecility, which in very many cases can be traced directly back to the drug-poisons, administered by the hand of a doctor, as a remedy of some life’s ills…” Disease and Its Causes, p. 48 by E.G. White

11. Why is the medical missionary work to be concentrated in the cities?

“Thousands of people in our cities are left in darkness, and Satan is well pleased with the delay; for this delay gives him opportunity to work in these fields with men of influence to further his plans…Let the watchmen arouse.” Medical Ministry p. 302.

“The Lord would have the people warned; for a great work will be done in a short time.” Medical Ministry p. 305.

“The importance of making our way in the great cities is still kept before me. For many years, the Lord has been urging upon us this duty, and yet we see but comparatively little accomplished in our great centers of population. If we do not take up this work in a determined manner, Satan will multiply difficulties which will not be easy to surmount. We are far behind in doing the work that should have been done in these long neglected cities. The work will be more difficult than it would have a few years ago. But if we take up the work in the name of the Lord, barriers will be broken down, and decided victories will be ours.” Medical Ministry pp. 301, 302.

“There is no change in the messages that God has sent in the past. The work in the cities is the essential work for this time. When the cities are worked as God would have them, the result will be the setting in operation of a mighty movement such as we have not yet witnessed.” Medical Ministry p. 304.

“The Lord is speaking to His people at this time, saying, Gain an entrance into the cities, and proclaim the truth in simplicity and in faith.” Medical Ministry p. 299.

“Henceforth medical missionary work is to be carried forward with an earnestness with which it has never yet been carried. This work is the door through which the truth is to find entrance to the large cities.” Testimonies Vol. 9, p.167.

For examples of “the work” that can be done in the large cities see the Home page: The Work and the book, Final Call for Medical Missionaries and City Missions Worldwide in the store section.

“The message that I am bidden to bear to our people at this time is, WORK THE CITIES WITHOUT DELAY, FOR TIME IS TOO SHORT… Warn the inhabitants of our great centers of population of the judgments that will fall upon the transgressors of God’s law.” Medical Ministry p. 300.

“In small and large cities, and in settlements that lie outside the cities, there should be maintained small centers where faithful watchmen are stationed who will labor for souls… Providence will open the way for these facilities in many places.” Evangelism p. 535.

12. What kind of work should be done in the cities?

  1. “Intemperance has filled our world, and medical missions should be established in every city. By this I do not mean that expensive institutions should be established, calling for a large outlay of means… Medical Missionary work should have its representative in every place in connection with the establishment of our churches. The relief of bodily suffering opens the way for the healing of the sin-sick soul.” Medical Ministry p. 322.
  2. “Centers of influence may be established in many places by the opening of health food stores, hygienic restaurants; (maintaining health & preventing disease) and treatments rooms… Plan to carry forward the work simply, sensibly, economically.” Testimonies Vol. 7, p. 234.
  3. “In connection with our city missions there should be suitable rooms where those in whom an interest has been awakened can be gathered for instruction.” Gospel Workers p. 347.
  4. “I have been given light that in many cities it is advisable for a restaurant to be connected with treatment rooms. The two can cooperate in upholding right principles… These establishments will serve as feeders to the sanitarians located in the country.” Testimonies Vol. 7, p. 60.
  5. “Wherever medical missionary work is carried on in our large cities, cooking schools should be held.” Counsels on Diet and Foods p. 469.
  6. “The people everywhere should be taught how to cook without milk and eggs so far as possible, and yet have their food wholesome and palatable.” Counsels on Diet and Foods pp. 469-470.
  7. “Cooking schools should be established, and house to house instruction should be given in the art of cooking wholesome food. Old and young should learn how to cook more simply… They are to be shown that a nourishing diet can be provided without the use of flesh foods.” Testimonies Vol. 2, p. 370.

13. Where should the people who work the cities live who are to work and warn the cities?

  1. “It is God’s design that our people should locate outside the cities, and from these OUTPOSTS warn the cities, and raise in them memorials for God.” Evangelism p. 76.
  2. “The cities are to be warned from OUTPOSTS. Said the messenger of God, “Shall not the cities be warned? Yes; not by God’s people living in them, but by their visiting them, to warn them of what is coming upon the earth.” Letter 182, 1902.
  3. ‘If in the providence of God we can secure places away from the cities, the Lord would have us do this.”
    2 Selected Messages p. 359.
  4. “The truth must be spoken, whether one will hear, or whether men will for bear. The cities are filled with temptation. We should plan our work in such a way as to keep our young people as far as possible from this contamination.”
    2 Selected Messages p. 359.

14. How are the churches to relate to the medical missionary work?

  1. “This is a work that the churches in every locality, north and south and east and west, should do. The churches have been given the opportunity of answering this work. Why have they not done it? Medical missionary work should have its representative in every place in connection with the establishment of our churches.”  Medical Ministry p. 322.
  2. “If the proper instruction were given, if the proper methods were followed, every church member would do his work as a member of the body…But the churches are dying, and they want a minister to preach to them…They should be brought into working order, that the breath of God may come to them.” Notebook Leaflets, Vol.1 #42.
  3. “We have come to a time when every member of the church should take hold of the Medical Missionary work…The members of the church are in need of an awakening that they may realize their responsibility to impart these truths.” Testimonies Vol. 7, p. 62.
  4. “Combine medical missionary work with the proclamation of the third angel’s message. Send out into the Churches, workers who will set the principles of health reform before every church…See if Breath of Life will not then come into these churches.” Medical Ministry p. 320.

15. What are our:

Credentials: “Brethren it is your privilege to carry with you the credentials that you are Christ’s.” Testimonies Vol. 5, p. 94. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:35.

Our Salary: “We surely need not to expect to escape trial and persecution in following our Savior; for this is the salary of those who follow Him.” Testimonies Vol. 2, p. 495.

Our Diploma: “Seek the Lord most earnestly, that you may become more and more refined, more spiritually cultured. Then you will have the very best diploma that anyone can have—the endorsement of God.” Testimonies Vol. 7, p. 281.

Our Test: “When the religion of Christ is most held in contempt, when His law is most despised, then should our zeal be the warmest and our courage and firmness the most unflinching. To stand in defense of truth and righteousness when the majority forsakes, to fight the battles of the Lord when champions are few―this will be our test.”  Testimonies Vol. 6, p. 136.

Our Motto: “Choose poverty, reproach, separation from friends, or any suffering rather that to defile the soul with sin. Death before dishonor or the transgression of God’s law should be the motto of every Christian.” Testimonies Vol. 5, p. 147.

Our Prescription: “The fifty-eighth chapter of Isaiah is the prescription for the maladies of the body and the soul.” (Please read prayerfully Isaiah 58.)

Isaiah 58:6-14:

6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy reward.

9 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:

11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.

13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:

14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Our Charter: “ The gospel commission is the great missionary charter of Christ’s Kingdom.” The Acts of the Apostles p. 12. Please read carefully and prayerfully Matthew 10:5-16, Luke 10:1-16, Matthew 28:19,20 and Mark 16:15-18.

“And the Jews marveled saying, How knoweth this man letters having never learned?” John 7:15.

“Much good can be done by those who do not hold diplomas as fully accredited physicians… God will help these workers.” Counsels on Health p. 538.

“All Intelligent men and women can be their own physician when they understand the true philosophy of health.”
2 Selected Messages p. 443.

“No agreement is so powerful as is success founded upon simplicity. And you may obtain success in the education of students as medical missionaries without a medical school that can qualify physicians to compete with the physicians of the world.”
Loma Linda Messages p. 559.

16. What is the connection between the health message, the gospel and the medical missionary work?

“When you make people intelligent on the question of health reform, you have prepared the way for them to give attention to the present truth for these last days.” Counsels to Writers and Editors p. 124.

“It is important that instructions should be given by ministers in regard to living temperately. They should show the relation which eating, working, resting, and dressing sustain to health.” Testimonies Vol. 1, p. 618.

“When the church is converted, there will be a very great reformation in dress.” Pamphlets 157 14.2.

“Eating, drinking, and dressing all have a direct bearing upon our spiritual advancement.” Counsels on Diet and Foods p. 57.

“This is true sanctification. It is not merely a theory, an emotion, or a form of words, but a living, active principle, entering into the everyday life. It requires that our habits of eating, drinking, and dressing, be such as to secure the preservation of physical, mental, and moral health, that we may present to the Lord our bodies—not an offering corrupted by wrong habits but—“a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God.” Counsels on Diet and Foods p. 165.

“As religious aggression subverts the liberties of our nation, those who would stand for freedom on conscience will be placed in unfavorable positions. For their own sake, they should, while they have opportunity, become intelligent in regard to disease, its causes, prevention and cure. And those who do this will find a field of labor anywhere. There will be suffering ones, plenty of them who will need help, not only among those of our own faith, but largely among those who know not the truth.” Counsels on Health p. 506. (See Medical Missionary Emergency Bag in the Store.)

17. What is the great purpose of the medical missionary work?

“Character then, is built by the harmonious development of the physical, mental, and spiritual powers and the message of health reform was given this movement by God as a very essential part of our training to prepare the characters of Seventh-day Adventists for the reception of the “latter rain” to give power for witnessing to the ends of the earth and then for their reception into His Kingdom by translation. It is obvious then, that we can not climb up some other way or substitute any other plans or means or method. This is one of the things upon which the enemy would deceive the very elect.” “Character” by Julius Gilbert White, Shorter’s Health Manual p. 25.

“Medical missionary work is the right hand of the gospel.” Testimonies Vol. 7, p. 59.

“Medical missionary work is to be a great entering wedge, whereby the diseased soul may be reached.” Counsels on Health p. 535.

“Do medical missionary work. Thus you will gain access to the hearts of the people.”
An Appeal for the Medical Missionary College, p. 14.

“In new fields no work is so successful as medical missionary work.” Medical Ministry p. 239.

“Medical missionary work brings to humanity the gospel of release from suffering… It is the gospel practiced, the compassion of Christ revealed.” Medical Ministry p. 239.

“Medical missionary work is the helping hand of the gospel ministry.” Medical Ministry p. 240.

“The object [or purpose] of our mission is the same as the object of Christ’ mission. Why did God send His Son to the fallen world? To make known, and to demonstrate to mankind His love for them. Throughout His ministry, He was to keep prominent His mission to save sinners…  God’s purpose in committing to men and women the mission that He committed to Christ is to disentangle His followers from all worldly policy and to give them a work identical with the work that Christ did.” Medical Ministry p. 25.

“The work of health reform is the Lord’s means for lessening suffering in our world and for purifying His church. Keep the health reform to the front is the message I am instructed to bear. Show so plainly its value that a widespread need for it will be felt. Abstinence from all hurtful food and drink is the fruit of true religion. He who is thoroughly converted will abandon every injurious habit and appetite. By total abstinence he will overcome his desire for health-destroying indulgences.”  Evangelism 263.3,4.

“We should ever remember that the object of the Medical missionary work is to point sin-sick men and women to the man of Calvary, who taketh away the sin of the world. By beholding Him, they will be changed into His likeness.” Ministry of Healing p. 144.

“The light God has given on health reform is for our salvation and the salvation of the world.” Temperance p. 249.

“Nothing can open doors for the truth like evangelistic medical missionary work. This will find access to hearts and minds and will be a means for converting many to the truth.” Evangelism p. 513.

18. What will be the result of doing medical missionary work?

“If the workers will humble their hearts before God, the blessing will come…There will be a wonderful revival of gospel medical missionary work.” Testimonies Vol. 9, p. 219.

“It is evident that light given us by God regarding our duty and privileges has not been acted upon. Men have supplanted God’s plans with their own plans. I am commissioned to say that the prosperity of the medical missionary work is in God’s order. This work must be done; the truth must be carried into the highways and byways. And ministers and church members should awake and see the necessity of co-operating in this work.” Testimonies Vol. 6, p. 299.

“The change in human hearts, the transformation of human characters is a miracle that reveals an ever—living Savior working to rescue souls. A consistent life in Christ is a great miracle.” Desire of Ages p. 407.

“The Lord has presented before me that many, many will be rescued from physical, mental and moral degeneracy through the practical influence of health reform.” Medical Ministry p. 271.

“Viewing matters from a high religious standpoint, we must be thorough reformers in order to be Christ-like.”
Testimony Studies on Diet and Foods p. 188.

Every gospel worker should feel the giving of instruction in the principles of healthful living is apart of his appointed work. Of this work there is a great need, and the world is open for it.” Counsels on Diet and Foods p. 459.

“The Lord has given instruction that the gospel is to be carried forward; and the gospel includes health reform in all its phases. Our work is to enlighten the world; for it is blind to the movements which are taking place, preparing the way for the plaques which God will permit to come up on the world. God’s faithful watchmen must give the warning. It is the Lord’s design that the restoring influence of health reform shall be apart of the last great effort to proclaim the gospel message.” Counsels on Diet and Foods p. 75.

“Thus genuine medical missionary work is bound up inseparably with the keeping of God’s commandments, of which the Sabbath is especially mentioned, since it is the great memorial of God’s creative work. Its observance is bound up with the work of restoring the moral image of God in man. This is the ministry which God’s people are to carry forward at this time. This ministry, regularly performed, will bring rich blessings to the church.” Testimonies Vol. 6, pp. 265-266.

“There will be a series of events revealing that God is master of the situation…In all fields, nigh and afar off, men will be called from the plow and from the more common commercial business vocations that largely occupy the mind, and will be educated in connection with men of experience. As they learn to labor effectively they will proclaim  the truth with power. Through most wonderful workings of divine providence, mountains of difficulty will be removed and cast into the sea. The message that means so much, for the dwellers upon the earth will be heard and understood. Men will know what is truth, Onward and still onward the work will advance with the whole earth be warned, and then shall the end come.” Testimonies Vol. 9, p. 96.

19. What are some of the promises, blessings and trials we can expect in this medical missionary work now and in the future?

“An ordinary mind, trained to obey a “Thus saith the Lord,” is better qualified for God’s work than are those who have capabilities but do not employ them rightly.” Review and Herald, Nov 27, 1900.

“Every truly honest soul will come to the light of truth…” The Great Controversy 522 (1911).

Persecution in its varied forms is the development of a principle which will exist as long as Satan exists and Christianity has vital power.” Last Day Events p. 610.

“In a large degree through our publishing houses is to be accomplished the work of that other angel who comes down from heaven with great power and who lightens the earth with his glory.” [Revelation 18:1], Testimonies Vol. 1, p. 140 (1902).

“More than one thousand will soon be converted in one day, most of whom will trace their first convictions to the reading of our publications.” Evangelism p. 693 (1885).

“There is a prospect before us of a continued struggle, at the risk of imprisonment, loss of property, and even of life itself, to defend the law of God which is made void by the laws of men…” Testimonies Vol. 5, 712.

20. What other blessings and counsel may the Medical Missionary expect?

Combine medical missionary work with the proclamation of the third angel’s message. Make regular, organized efforts to lift the church members out of the dead level in which they have been for years. Send out into the churches workers who will live the principles of health reform. Let those be sent who can see the necessity of self-denial in appetite, or they will be a snare to the church. See if the breath of life will not come into your churches. A new element needs to be brought into the work. God’s people must realize their great need and peril and take up the work that lies nearest to them.”  Testimonies Vol. 6, p. 267.

“When temperance is presented as a part of the gospel, many will see their need of reform…As this instruction is given, the people will become interested in other lines of Bible study.” Testimonies Vol. 6, p. 76.

“Those who will enter our large cities to labor as medical evangelists must begin their work in a wise way. Angels of God will make the impression, and under the hallowed influence of the Holy Spirit, hearts will be touched.” Review and Herald, Sept.10, 1908.

“In new fields no work is so successful as medical missionary work. If our our ministers would work earnestly to obtain an education in medical missionary lines, they would be far better fitted to do the work Christ did as a medical missionary. By diligent study and practice, they can become so acquainted with the principles of health reform, that wherever they go they will be a great blessing to the people they meet.” Medical Ministry p. 239.

Thousands need and would gladly receive instruction concerning the simple methods of treating the sick—methods that are taking the place of the use of poisonous drugs.” Testimonies Vol. 3, p. 162.

“In the future our work is to be carried forward in self-denial and self-sacrifice even beyond that which we have seen in past years… If we do our part in faith, God will open ways before us now undreamed of.” Manuscript 12, 1913.

“As we near the close of time, we must rise higher and still higher on the question of health reform and Christian temperance, presenting it in a more positive and decided manner. We must strive continually to educate the people, not only by our words but by our practice. Precept and practice combined have a telling influence.” Manuscript 87, 1908.

“God’s people should place themselves where they will grow in grace, being sanctified, body, soul, and spirit, by the truth. When they break away from all health-destroying indulgences, they will have a clearer perception of what constitutes true godliness. A wonderful change will be seen in the religious experience…” Counsels on Health 579.2.

“Those who live in the last days of this earth’s history need to be fully established in the principles of health reform.”
Testimonies Vol. 3, pp. 140-141.

“My brethren, the Lord calls for unity, for oneness. We are to be one in the faith. I want to tell you that when the gospel ministers and the medical missionary workers are not united, there is placed on our churches the worst evil that can be placed there. Our medical missionaries ought to be interested in the work of our conferences, and our conference workers ought to be as much interested in the work of our medical missionaries.” Manuscript 46, 1904.

“The Lord calls upon you, oh, church that has been blessed with the truth, to give a knowledge of this truth to those who know it not.” Medical Ministry p. 333.

“Talk faith, work in faith, and advance in faith. Obstacles will be removed as we lay hold of the promises of God. Let the Lord’s people go forward, and their hearts will be made strong. What is the promise to those living in these last days?—“Turn you to the stronghold, ye prisoners of hope: even today do I declare that I will render double unto thee…. Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the Lord shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain.” Medical Ministry p. 335.

21. What is the connection between the health reform and the medical missionary work, the “latter rain” and the second coming of Jesus?

The Health Reform

“For years the Lord has been calling the attention of His people to Health Reform. This is one of the greatest branches of the work of preparation for the coming of the Son of Man.” Counsels on Diet and Foods pp. 70-71.

“Every gospel worker should feel that the giving of instruction in the principles of healthful living is a part of His appointed work.”
Ministry of Healing p. 147.

“Those who live in the last days of earth’s history need to be fully established in the principles of healthful reform.”
Testimonies Vol. 3, pp. 140-141.

“The light God has given on health reform is for our salvation and the salvation of the world.” Temperance p. 249.

The Medical Missionary Work

“Nothing will open doors for the truth like evangelistic medical missionary work. This will find access to hearts and minds and will be a means for converting many to the truth.” Evangelism p. 513.

“The work of the true medical missionary is largely a spiritual work. It includes prayer and the laying on of hands; he therefore should be as sacredly set apart for this work as is the minister of the gospel.” Counsels on Health p. 540.

“Time is short, and there is a great work to be done. If you feel no interest in the work that is going forward, if you will not encourage medical missionary work in the churches, it will be done without your consent: for it is the work of the God and it must be done.” Testimonies Vol. 8, p. 75.

“We have come to a time when every member of the church should take hold of the medical missionary work… The members of the church are in need of an awakening that they may realize their responsibility to impart these truths.” Testimonies Vol. 7, p. 62.

“Every worker is to make the great Medical Missionary his example. Then there will be seen in his work a purity, a righteousness, that will bring success. Unless self-renunciation and entire consecration are brought into the medical missionary work, human ideas will be followed, and evil influences will come in to sway things in accordance with the purposes of the enemy.”
Special Testimonies for the Church 19.

The Latter Rain and The Second Coming of Jesus

“The truth for this time, the third angel’s messages, is to be proclaimed with a loud voice [with increasing power] as we approach the great final test. This test must come to the churches in connection with true medical missionary work, a work that has the Great Physician to dictate it all it comprehends.Loma Linda Messages p. 336.

Question? Has your church passed or failed the test in regard to true medical missionary work?

Question? What is the connection between health reform and the medical missionary work the “latter rain” and the second coming of Jesus?

“And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power, and the earth was lightened with his glory.” Rev. 18:1. (Read entire chapter.)

See: Isaiah 58:3-8. (The restoring of paths to dwell in, is the medical missionary work, repairers of the breach made in the law of God.) Notice verse 8: Then shall thy light spring forth speedily and thy righteousness shall go before thee: the glory of the Lord shall be thy rereward.” {rearguard}

“The work of the people of God is to enlighten the world, in accordance with the directions given in the 58th chapter of Isaiah. Here is represented the plan of work which is to be carried on in every place where truth takes hold of minds and hearts. In connection with the proclamation of the message is to be done the work of relieving families who are in distress. Those who take their position on the Lord’s side are to see in Seventh-day Adventists a warm-hearted, self-denying, self-sacrificing people, who cheerfully and gladly minister to the needy.” Manuscript Releases, Vol 1, 224.

“Search heaven and earth, and there is no truth revealed more powerful that which is made manifest in works of mercy to those who need our sympathy and aid. This is the truth as it is in Jesus. When those who profess the the name of Christ shall practice the principles of the golden rule, the same power will attend the gospel as in apostolic times.” Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing p. 137.

“Instruction has been given me that the message should go forth with power in the cities in eastern states… To us, as God’s servants, has been entrusted the third angel’s message the binding off message, that is to prepare a people for the coming of the King… All through the large cities God has honest souls who are interested in what is truth.” Testimonies Vol. 9, pp. 97-101.

Thus genuine medical missionary work is bound up inseparably with the the keeping of God’s commandments, of which the Sabbath is especially mentioned, since it is the great memorial of God’s creative work. Its observance is bound up with the work of restoring the moral image of God in man. This is the ministry God’s people are to carry forward at this time. This ministry, rightly performed, will bring rich blessings to the church.” Testimonies Vol. 6, pp. 265-266.

“From one end of the world to the other must the message of Christ’s soon coming be proclaimed. The third angel’s message—the last message of mercy to a perishing world is so precious, so glorious. Let the truth go forth as a lamp that burneth. Mysteries into which angels desire to look, which prophets and kings and righteous men desired to know, the church of God is to make known.” Medical Ministry p. 334.

“As soon as Christ becomes an abiding presence in the heart, we shall not be able to see souls perishing in ignorance of the truth and be at rest. We shall make any sacrifice that we may reach them; and none of us are so poor that we cannot make daily sacrifices for Christ.” Medical Ministry p. 334.

‘If we will work in harmony with one another and with heaven, God will demonstrate His power in our behalf as He did for the disciples on the Day of Pentecost.” Medical Ministry p. 334.

We shall see the medical missionary work broadening and deepening at every point of its progress, because of the inflowing of hundreds of thousands of streams, until the whole earth is covered as the waters cover the sea.” Medical Ministry p. 317.

“The terrible disasters that are befalling great cities ought to arouse us to intense activity in giving the warning message to the people in these congested centers of population while we still have opportunity. The most favorable time for the presentation of our message in the cities has passed by. Sin and wickedness are rapidly increasing; and now we shall have to redeem the time by laboring all the more earnestly.” Medical Ministry p. 310.

“For yet a little while and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry.” Hebrews 10:37.

“WE OUGHT TO OBEY GOD RATHER THAN MEN.” ACTS 5:29

“BE THOU FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH, AND I WILL GIVE THEE A CROWN OF LIFE.” REVELATION 2:10

“BEHOLD I COME QUICKLY: HOLD THAT FAST WHICH THOU HAST, THAT NO MAN TAKE THY CROWN.” REVELATION 3:11
